5 FAQ of Being in an LDR

Standard

One of the usual things people asked to me during a getting to know activity is whether I am taken or not.  That question flatters me especially if it comes from a cute guy (lol!) but I cannot deny the fact that,  “YES! I AM TAKEN.” Many thought I am not because I usually go out alone, do things on my own and special days seem to be just ordinary days for me. It is because I am committed to someone that is miles away.

Toni and I during our first few months.

Toni and I during our first few months.

My boyfriend- TONI,  lives in North Carolina, USA with his mom and step-dad. He went there after he graduated in college last year. And me? I’m here in the Philippines with my family, finishing my Masters Degree and working.

At first I thought that this relationship won’t work out because I don’t really believe in virtual relationship but the magic of love helped me conquer that idea and give me courage to venture in this kind with him.

Our last photo before he left.

Our last photo before he left.

We were in our 15th month when he left to North Carolina. A friend, who’s a guidance counselor told me that it is quite a good foundation already to start with an LDR. I just need to trust my partner to sustain that relationship she said.

And now, we are actually celebrating the 1st anniversary of our Long Distance Relationship (LDR). I am really glad that despite of all the struggles we had, we are still together by heart 🙂 He don’t actually mind the number, he said to me that what matters to him is that we’re still together. (Oh! guys have really different way of thinking.)

When the people I met got to know that I am in an LDR, they usually become curious of it and flood me with questions about my special kind of relationship. I can actually name more than 5 FAQ questions but I guess just to leave something to your curiosity, I will just give 5 questions and answer them as truthful as I can.

So let’s get the ball rollin’

Question #1: Is (being in an LDR relationship) it hard?

The answer to this question is actually predictable. Yes it is hard. Any relationship, whether it is a LDR, like mine or not, it always goes through some struggles. What makes our relationship harder than the other is the fact that we cannot see each other personally, we cannot hold each other hands or steal a kiss whenever we feel like being sweet and a lot other things that ordinary couples can do whenever they are together.

A print screen shot during our 2nd Anniversary. He is already in North Carolina and I'm here in the Philippines.

Constant communication is a must. It is actually one of the key to a successful LDR relationship. Being a little bit crazy sometimes won’t hurt like having a virtual kiss, singing for each other or eating with each other or even throwing a party for his/her birthday even if he’s not there is sweet. It is really nice that you try to schedule to do things together despite of the distance.

Making him/her feel that he is remembered will make the relationship. It is actually a blessing that there are a lot of means of communication now a days that will really help you to be updated with one another.

He cooks for me and I cook for him too. But of course, we cannot taste each other's dishes. *crazy right?*

He cooks for me and I cook for him too. But of course, we cannot taste each other’s dishes. *crazy right?*

Question#2: Do you still fight?

Surprisingly, YES! lol! How? We fight about little things like being not on time during our everyday chat date, forgetting about something scheduled for us to do and of course, jealousy. I actually believe that it is a part of nourishing the relationship.

Assuring your partner that everything will not change especially the feeling that you have for him/her will be a great way to make it up. On the other hand, trusting each other is an integral part of making your relationship work. Being a little jealous sometimes is natural but too much of it can slowly kill the relationship.

This quote is posted on their wall at NC. We reflected on it after a serious fight of something I already forget. (Never count each other's mistake. Just forget about it!)

I find it better to be open to each other even with the small conflicts because if you will just shrug it off it might become bigger and be the reason of frequent fights. So it is always better to settle things together than taking it as a personal problem. Anyways, this kind of relationship should be nourished by two individuals.

Question#3: When he will be coming back?

I’m quite hesitant to answer this question because personally, we don’t really know the answer. We don’t know when we will see each other again which make the relationship a little bit harder. The follow up question of this will be, “How’s that?” and I will just answer with, “I don’t know”.

It is really sad that we cannot determine when we will be going to see each other again. It is vague because we want to see each other when we are already ready personally, financially and spiritually. Because we both agreed that when we will see each other again, we will never ever part ways again.

Our promise ring. :)

Our promise ring 🙂

Maybe for others this will be an issue of security- whether he/she will be really coming back or not.  For me,  it is just the FAITH with my partner that makes me hold on to that.

Many LDR relationships have the duration or have a chance to see each once in a while and I envy them with that because in my case I am waiting and still be waiting but I hope not in vain. lol! But I am really praying that we will see each other soon because we miss each other so much already.

Question#4: How do you make your relationship work?

We actually had an agreement before he went there that we need to talk to each other every day. That sounds tacky but I think we need it to overcome the distance that hinders us to let each other feel the love we have. We need to sacrifice an hour and a half a day for him and a night for me to meet each other despite of the 12-13hrs timezone gap.

It is not easy especially for me because I am working and sometimes I can help but to bring some things to do at home and missed it out because I need to respect our time. In the same way, he needs to wake up early which is not his kind to catch up with me.

On the other hand, if we cannot meet each other on that time or day, we leave a message to each other so that no one will be expecting a chat session. That way, I can still have night outs with some of my friends and for him, help his mother in some errands at home.

It is really a SACRIFE but it will be a proof that you are really willing and interested to keep the relationship working.

Other than that, we also have our group in Facebook that includes just the two of us. He made that and I don’t know for what reason but I find it helpful.

We also still play together, eat together, sing together, dream together and pray together (we exchange prayers). We never let the distance or the timezone to hinder us to bond. As much as possible, we are trying to include each other not just in our schedule but also in our daily activities.

We eat our noodles together :)

We eat our noodles together 🙂

Question#5: What are your future plans?

We just plan to be together someday. There is no specific date or place and plans but we are quite sure that after everything fall in its place already, we will be with each other.

Of course we talk about settling down but not too soon. We both have our personal dreams that we need to achieve before everything else.

“IT IS NOT EASY BUT IT IS NOT IMPOSSIBLE. “ That is what I always got to say when people ask me, how is it to be in the relationship like ours. It is just love and other little things that keeps the relationship alive. Those little things include: FAITH, RESPECT, SACRIFICE, UNDERSTANDING, FORGIVENESS and all sort that are related to those.

I put this sticker on his color during one of our monthsaries that he remembered to bring flowers for me.

I put this sticker on his color during one of our monthsaries that he remembered to bring flowers for me.

I just feel that it is true when they say, you can do everything for love. In my case, at first, I do not believe in LDR but when I get to know him and he said that eventually, he needs to go back to US, I just can’t say no to his proposal of pursuing our relationship. It is him who made me believe that everything will be bearable.

I am happy that even we are far from each other for a year; it feels that nothing has changed but the feeling which is stronger than ever. This distance made me more mature in my perspective when it comes to relationship. I learned a lot in that 1 year of not being together personally.

I just miss him and our crazy moments.

I just miss him and our crazy moments.

“It is not the physical contact that defines LOVE but the idea and choice of being together despite of all the struggles.”

I just want to end it there. I’m still hoping for the best as always. What do you think about my relationship? Is there any suggestions that you can make to make it grow more? I hope I can read from you.

God Bless us all sweeties.

“Pause”: My Nature Haul (Part II)

Standard

Hi sweeties! Tired of the picture overload of my last post? Warning! This one is almost the same.

It is my Day 2 at Pause 2013. Day 1 was just about the mini forest and this one will be about the mini farm that they have inside the vicinity.

I hope you’re as excited to see this post as I am excited to share it with you.

My office mates from the next room adjacent to mine and I decided to wake up early to explore the place once more. We woke up around 5am and prepare ourselves for a whole day session.

After that, we walk at the hallway and saw a big mirror. It is so vintage looking! And I can’t get enough but to have my photo taken with it.

I made it sepia to have a nice look. I am actually fascinated with anything that is vintage.

Aside from the mirror, I also saw this image of Saint Therese of the Child Jesus,a Carmelite sister along the hallway.

While waiting for our breakfast that will be served at 7am, we walk around at the other side of the place but we still pass by the mini forest.

Because it was too early, we had a hard time finding our way out from the building. We use the main entrance to exit that time because the other gates are locked.

My office mates  brought me to the garden or the mini farm they have. But before that, we searched for this flower in the grass. It is actually isolated because all around this flower is  a grass and green leaves. I just wonder why it is there.

Goodbye Pause 2013! I learned a lot. Certainly, that was an unforgettable learning experience for me. I hope to apply all the insights I gained in that retreat to this upcoming school year.

So now, I can finally say, “Hello school year 2013-2014!”

I am ready!

“Pause”: My Nature Haul (Part I)

Standard

Early this week I went to a 2 days nature haul plus a date with God. Actually it comes with my work as a teacher in a Catholic school. It is a yearly event. It is like teachers’ settling down before the school year starts.

This year is quite different compared to my other “Pause” (that’s how we call it- a break from all the things that we are thinking about) because with my experience  this year, I am now more connected to the other employees and I don’t feel isolated anymore 🙂

So there, to cut all my long sentences, I decided to make it a photo post 🙂 So enjoy the tons of pictures that you will be seeing 🙂 Better to brace yourselves sweeties! lol!

This is my Day 1. Call time is 7am.

Good morning my lousy yet still pretty hair! lol!

I rushed and barely do my make up and jumped to the bus that will bring us to the venue of our Pause this school year.

I went to my designated room to take some rest after lunch.

After taking a nap, we had a plenary session. Then a short talk and points for reflection… then… my favorite part! quiet time or “A walk with God”. It is actually a time when we can walk around, pray and just it! This year, I do it with some friends.

My Day 1 “Walk with God” ended there. I was fascinated by the place but I just gone to a half of it. My walk shall be continued next morning 🙂

I guess, God’s love reflects in that kind of place. Praying won’t be really hard. Pausing won’t really be such a boredom.

I certainly love it!

I hope you enjoyed the place too as much as I did sweeties 🙂

Colorful Treats from Ate Aby

I can say that my ate (sister) is generous. Even though at our age, we still have little fights, she will never go wrong about the things that I love. She knows them very well.

Last time I craved for cupcakes, I also able to browse some sites offering colorful  homemade and delicious looking macaroons. I once told my ate that I want to taste those colorful macaroons.

This how macaroons look like when I was in kindergarten.

I love macaroons since my kindergarten! That was always my “baon” when I go to school. Dad usually buys me macaroons and fruit juice for snack. It is very tasty and sweet that’s why my childhood heart fell in love with it.

But the macaroons now, look different from the macaroons that I used to have for snacks. It looks edgy because it is colorful. For me, it actually looks like a toy than a food. Well anyway, it is always the thought that counts. Ate bought me a set of it which includes 5 colorful pieces of macaroons. It is inside a clear plastic container and arranged intricately with a ribbon 🙂 That actually made me hesitant to eat it at first.

A Gift of Wellness from GlamourBox and Nurture Spa

Isn’t it nice if you can treat your mom somewhere she can relax even just for awhile? Moms deserve it right?

That’s why I really work hard to win some contests for Mother’s Day. But sadly, Mother’s Day came and I did not receive any notification from the giveaways I joined. So, I thought I did not win any. I just treated mom and my siblings with pizza during Mother’s Day but I think that it would be very nice if I will be able to add it with something that mom will really enjoy.

Until last week, a friend from Facebook tagged me at a post of GlamourBoxPH. Yehey! I got a prize for mom. Better late than never as they say.

Since my childhood days I’ve been collecting those colorful accents for my outfits. My older sister even criticized me for being such an accessories addict when we were a little bit younger… Oh well, I cannot blame her. Maybe she’s just sick of having some boxes in our room containing those little treasures of mine.

That’s why as a blog hopper, I cannot miss out joining giveaways with accessories (whether it’s an earring, necklace, bracelet, etc.) as a price. I always want it better than cosmetic products.

One of the giveaways that I joined last month was Swirls and Scribbles X Glitter Addiction’s and their giveaway prize is a violet feather necklace. I really eyed to get it. I want it to be a partner for my feathered earrings… And luckily, I won!

Enrollment Haul: I’m a Student Again! Wohhooo!

Standard

Hi sweeties! Today, I went to the university where I graduated from in college. Actually, it is the same university where I am currently taking up my Masters Degree. I went there today for my enrollment and that’s what I want to share with you 🙂

Do you ever wonder how the process of enrollment goes at Philippine Normal University, Manila? I will try to share with you my experience today. It is actually unique compared to others and that what makes me think that it is something good to share.

This is what you can found in the entrance gate of the university... Home sick!

This is what you can found at the entrance gate of the university… Home sick!

I went really early because I am actually excited to enroll again after being on leave for 2 semesters. The 1st semester was for my preparation for the comprehensive exam and the 2nd was as advised by the previous department head as it was summer then and it won’t be really that practical to enroll my thesis. So there, I missed school! I really love studying… seriously. I think it is one of my hobbies (Oh! I’m sorry for being such a geek.)

Well anyway, I arrived in the university at around 7am. I took an off to work to enroll because I already envisioned the scenario that I am used to encounter since my undergraduate years. Because I am early, I had enough time to chit chats with my former classmates and catch up on each other.

At exactly 8am, the secretary and the graduate students’ adviser came. But before that, I didn’t saw in the list of subjects offered the one and only course I am getting which is Educ. 600- Pagsulat ng Tesis (Thesis Writing)… that actually made me a little anxious but I know I can always plead to have it offered because it is just my first semester in that subject. As far as I’m concerned, I am the only one who is newly enrolled in that subject that’s why I am alone in the whole process of the enrollment. *sigh!*

As per advised by the graduate students’ adviser, I talked to the professor who will be handling me with my study. I am actually nervous in appealing to her because I’ve known her since undergraduate (which is an advantage) and I know that she’s really good but moody. I waited for her in her office knowing that she will arrive a little bit late. Good thing her student assistant- Elpidio (same name as my favorite uncle) went in and was generous enough to accompany me to the auditorium where the professor I am waiting for will be staying.

As soon as she arrived, I sensed that she’s not in the good mood and I waited until she calms down before I approached her. That actually, took time and I also feel that I am not that ready to talk to her. My hands are really cold that moment but eventually, I took courage and I approached her when I saw that she’s actually settled. And guess what? She accepted me as her student! Wooooooh! 🙂 I feel like I want to skip and sing like a child after she accepted me. Thank God!

The new steps in enrolling... *Sorry for my chipped nail polish*

The new procedre in enrolling… *Sorry for my chipped nail polish*

That was actually just the start of my enrollment adventure. Next, I go back to our department to get the registration form and have my name enlisted. After that, I went to the snake-like line in the other building to get my tuition fee computed. I saw a friend there and she told me that I need to go to the next building or to the computer shop to have a print out of my assessment. I chose the latter to avoid long lines.

I don’t know what to do at the computer shop and how to get the form they are printing because as I mentioned, I was on leave for two semesters and this step is not included during my last enrollment  What I did is to ask around my fellow students who are actually rushing… I am happy that they are kind enough to answer my questions and helped me out. After that process, I got two short bond papers with the amount of money that I need to pay for my tuition fee.

Then I go back to the snake-like line… Waited… Until after 15-30 minutes, I realized that there is a special lane for the students who are taking up thesis. Another wooooh! Life saving lane! It was heaven sent!

Thanks for the special lane! :)

Thanks for the special lane! 🙂 It can also be called as privilege lane 🙂 lol!

So to cut it short, I went straight to that line because no one is actually there and had the two bond papers assessed. The first amount was crossed out and became larger. It is actually nearly doubled, but the accountant said that the tuition fee I will be paying will be good for three semesters which is an advantage for me. That can be equated to more savings, longer time to save and no more long lines for at least three semesters!

I was really excited to go to the cashier that I did not notice that the accountant did not sign my form 😦 I was already in the cashier when the guard inspected my papers and asked me to go back… Again, I cut in the line… I abused my privilege as a thesis student (lol!) After the accountant signed my form, I immediately go back to the cashier and pay. The line in the cashier was short. Yehey!

The yellow one was the set or registration form and those are the two bond papers that I printed out.

Soon I go to the accounting and gave them the portion of the paper that they need to keep. It was fast also. Rock on!

Then, the getting of the class card was the slowest process- I think. It is under the Registrar’s Office this time. The last time I enrolled, it was under the department where the student came from. Anyways, I was just in line until a little bit past lunch break. According to the ones in front, there were no personnel assisting the students for at least an hour that’s why the line became longer and the process became slow. *sigh!* But after all the waiting, I finally get my one and only class card for three semester 🙂

I drop the Student Affairs’ portion on my registration card to their office. They actually have a brilliant idea of just putting a drop box outside their office and presto! You just need to put it there… no more line, waiting and talking. Good!

Then my last stop was at our department. I also need to give the last small portion of my registration form to them. It was lunch break that’s why I waited outside the office. Good thing the secretary arrived before 1pm! Yehey! And she was so nice by accepting that little card. She actually invited me to stay a little bit longer but I was really tired, hungry and eager to go home so I refused but very thankful for her assistance.

My lucky white blouse :)

My lucky white blouse 🙂

It was done! Yehey! Finally!!! It was really tiring but happy! I am now a bonafide student again! Wooohhh!

As I go out the university, I realized that this is just the start of many things that I need to work hard for if I really want to graduate soon  and I am willing to take those long lines and slow steps  again just to make sure that I will get the degree I am dreaming of. I just hope that with all the prayers and perseverance, everything will go as smooth as it should be. *crossed fingers*

As a reward, I get myself a desert for lunch. I usually skip this part of the meal but because I've been through many things that morning, I must celebrate!
